MEET DIETITIAN MALOU Malou Aragon Nichols (pronouns: she/they/siya) is a registered dietitian nutritionist and energy practitioner working at the intersections of race, gender, and class. As a queer, second-gen Filipino/a/x millennial and third-culture kid, Malou aspires to bring cultural humility, lived experience, and radical compassion to their care work. To better support clients seeking embodiment tools and skills, they study and integrate Somatic Experiencing® techniques. ABOUT KALA NUTRITION Kala Nutrition offers affinity to pamilya [family] stories working alongside the kalabaw [carabao]—water buffalo endemic to the Philippines. Kalabaw are dependable farm companions—trusted besties who provide food security, hardworking partnership, and a deep connection to nature. These qualities inspire our approach to care work. We considered the name Kala as it translates to "turtle shell" in the Filipino language— chosen as an expression in deep reverence for the lands we now live and work as settlers and uninvited guests on Turtle Island. Our logo showcases the ancient Philippines script Baybayin, displaying the consonants KA-LA to represent "Kala Nutrition." We honor the Original Stewards - the Núuchiu, Tsétsėhéstȧhese, Hinono’eiteen, Oc'eti S'akowin, and other Native Peoples - of whose lands we work and live [colonially known as Fort Collins, Colorado.] We are settlers of Austronesian Filipino Visayan and Luzon ancestry; and belong to the Indigenous People of ethnolinguist groups Hiligaynon/ Illongo, Waray Waray, in tracing our lineage back to our recent ancestors. Our diasporic settler ancestors and our presence on stolen land (Turtle Island) influence the violence and oppression faced by People of the Global Majority, Two-Spirit, Trans and Indigenous Peoples. We strive to support and follow the leadership of Indigenous, Two-Spirit, Elders, Wisdom Keepers, Artists, and Change-makers. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - FAQ FAQ-1. Who do you work with? We serve adolescents (13+ yrs) and adults. We celebrate and welcome all identities and every person! FAQ-2. Do you take insurance for nutrition services? We do. Starting January 1, 2026 we will no longer work directly with insurance companies. This allows our team to focus solely on your clinical care without having treatment dictated by what insurance will and will not cover. It also allows me to provide you with the utmost privacy, as I do not have to submit clinical documentation or diagnostic information to your carrier. Insurance Pay information https://tinyurl.com/35n2xps8 Private Pay information https://tinyurl.com/mpefme9c If you would like to use your insurance, you can call the member number on the back of your insurance card and ask about out-of-network benefits for nutrition care services. The billing codes – nutrition management codes or “CPT” codes – most often used are: 97802 (“medical nutrition therapy – assessment”) 97803 (“medical nutrition therapy – follow up”) 97904 (“medical nutrition therapy – group”) S9470 (“nutritional counseling”) FAQ-3. What can we expect from your team's nutrition approach? We work towards an individualized nutrition care plan that is rooted in your individual strengths, values, and beliefs. Our approach and values include consideration of autonomy, collaboration, and client-centered care. We recognize that current food and body liberation and justice movements are made possible by the ongoing dedication and work of and for those with compounded or intersecting marginalization, notably Trans, Black, Indigenous, Fat, Disabled, Two-Spirit, LGBQIA+ communities. The core values behind frameworks like HAES and IE aren’t new; many of these principles have long existed in Ancient, Indigenous worldviews, such as sovereignty and relationship-based health.* As led by the fat liberation movement, our team uses "fat" as a neutral descriptor—not a judgment or moral measure. We don't use clinical language like “ob*sity” or “ovrw*ight”, due to its harmful impact on Black and Disabled communities.* FAQ-4. How often do you recommend meeting for nutrition sessions? We recommend starting with weekly sessions. A consistent schedule and meeting frequency support our partnership, a sense of progress, and the sustainability of our 1:1 work together. Participants often transition to biweekly or monthly sessions for maintenance and support once they feel ready to, i.e., upon increased confidence in meeting their health goals or nutrition progress. We can discuss these details and as we put together a nutrition care plan. *Reference List https://tinyurl.com/42paw28s Tog'-oiak | Néá\'ėšéme | Hohóu | Pilamayaye | Salmat | Thank you Núuchiu, Tsétsėhéstȧhese, Hinono’eiteen, Oc'eti S'akowin, Pilipino, English 🇵🇸🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🌀 GETTING STARTED Book a free 15-minute consultation and schedule your first appointment!: https://calendly.com/malourd/discoverycall States we serve (telehealth): AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, HI, ID, IN, MD, MA, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OK, OR, PA, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI, WY Maria-Lourdes "Malou" Aragon Nichols, RDN pronouns: she/they/siya NPI# 1154635662 Phone 253-722-7367 Fax 877-832-8784
